Introduction to Military History

My name is James Eaton and I’ve been fascinated with the history of war for most of my life. I started young; my mother gave me Bruce Catton’s brilliant trilogy about the Army of the Potomac when I was nine years old.

The American Civil War was an early interest, but that interest soon branched into the world wars. I have a particular interest in the terrible clash between the forces of the German Hitlerian Reich and the Soviet Union. That fascination has led me to study the German language for nearly five decades, and as a German language student I also took two semesters of Russian.

I worked for many years as a newspaper journalist where I was forced to write about the banalities of daily life. Once I covered an air show at Grand Forks Air Force Base and rather than regurgitate the usual trivialities about the crowd and weather I chose to describe the combat aircraft there and their respective roles in United States military policy during the Cold War. My editor, with whom I frequently quarreled, described it as “quite a story.” I loved it.

With this blog, I can now write about and publish the topics that interest me. I hope they’ll interest some of you too.

I am fascinated by all military history. Some people focus on a particular war or era; I'm interested in them all, from the ancients to the high-tech. I started with the American Civil War but I have developed a particular obsession with the German-Soviet war of 1941 to 1945.
